Sunrise Radio is Britain's longest running radio station for South Asians based in Hounslow, West London.
Launched in 1989 on 1413 AM to Southall which has a large Asian community, it was awarded the BBC's Greater London Radio licence in 1994, broadcasting Londonwide on 1458 AM. In 2014, the previous owner of Sunrise Radio's group of stations went into administration, which led to the 1458 licence being sold by the administrators to the Lycamobile group, who relaunched a similar service for South Asians on their original frequency
Sunrise still had one licence that they own, Buzz Radio which they relaunched as Sunrise Radio with a new company and management to operate the radio station still based at Sunrise House in Southall.
This station on 963/972 AM originally launched as the AC format Viva! owned by then Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed which rebranded as Liberty Radio which was then sold to a Christian group who introduced some Christian programming.
The licence was lost and awarded to Club Asia who introduced the current youth Asian format in 2003. It was later sold to the then Sunrise Radio Group and relaunched as Buzz Asia and then Buzz Radio and Sunrise Radio 2.
Sunrise Radio went national on February 29th 2016 on the Sound Digital multiplex. They relaunched with new imaging, the first in over twenty years and a new focus on playing the biggest mix of Asian music with a young adult slant to comply with the London AM licence. The station also moved out of Sunrise House to a new studio complex in Hounslow.
