Radio Jackie is a commercial local radio station broadcasting news, classic hits and local information to South-West London and North Surrey from its studios at the old Post Office in Tolworth.
The station's origins are in pirate radio, launching on 21st March 1969 as a 30 minute slot, before developing into a weekend service in the 1970s, then a full-time service from a studio in Worcester Park pioneering a small scale commercial radio format which would become commonplace in later years, along with raising money for local charities.
Radio Jackie had been largely left alone by the authorities until 1985 when the station was raided, with equipment and transmitters removed. Jackie managed to come back on-air and announced that they would be closing down. Hundreds of people visited the station for their farewell show.
In the mid 90s, Jackie bid for the local commercial radio licence for Kingston, this was awarded to Thames Radio in 1996, which launched in 1997. Thames Radio's owners Radio Investments Ltd decided to sell the station in 2003 for the nominal sum of £1 to Radio Jackie Limited. Jackie initially kept the Thames brand while adapting the format of the station for the relaunch of the station later in that year. The station remained on-air as they moved from Kingston to Tolworth while work on building the studios continued.
Thames Radio closed on Sunday 19th October 2003 with the final presenter being Jess Whittaker, then Radio Jackie relaunched with the last presenter to be on-air in 1985, Dave Owen.
