Terry Hughes
Terry started in broadcasting in 1979 at a talking newspaper for the visually impaired, then he spent a few years in hospital radio. He did a few shows on Beacon 303 and BRMB, including joint shows with Gordon Astley, Mike Baker and Roger Day, and some gigs with KKJ, and at the age of 18 was being considered for a full time role in Independent Local Radio but his dad said "Son, go and get a proper job".
Terry has always been obsessed with pirate radio, and in the mid 80s he listened to Radio Caroline and Laser 558 from afar, dreaming of a day when he could fulfil his dream of presenting on Radio Caroline. He sent a demo tape to Radio Caroline in the early 80s, and it was sent back with a rejection letter.
And that was that. Until COVID came along. Like everyone else Terry was locked down and had more time on his hands. He started putting shows together, he published them on Mixcloud, he got picked up by a UK based internet radio station and did 6 months of "Terry's Real Gold" live radio every weekend. He decided to adopt "Terry's Real Gold" as his radio brand. He also became the presenter of the syndicated Retro Charts weekly countdown. He was one of the launch presenters on Great British Radio, the brainchild of Mike Osman, the Capital Gold legend. Terry also joined Sunshine Radio in 2021 as a launch presenter.
However his biggest achievement was when he was recruited by the very same Radio Caroline that he had adored since he was a child. In 2021 he took over the weekday early breakfast slot, from 6am to 7am UK time. He built up a loyal set of thousands of early riser listeners all over the world. He even presented shows from Caroline’s radio ship the Ross Revenge, anchored off the coast of England. Terry left Radio Caroline in 2024 after 4 years and 1000 early breakfast shows.
In April 2025 Terry joined East London Radio, whose Chairman is the radio legend Paul Robinson (retired national BBC radio exec and ex-CEO of Talk Radio) and he now presents a unique New Modern Rock show. Terry is still on Sunshine Radio too several years after joining, presenting his Terry's Real Gold show every week.
