Spotify and Crunchyroll roll out anime playlists via new collaboration

Anime streaming company Crunchyroll has announced an exclusive partnership with Spotify, designed to provide the latter’s listeners with curated anime music playlists.

The playlists’ songs are carefully chosen to aurally steep Spotify users into the world of Japanese animation – an entertainment art form, which, as of 2023 according to a Grandview Research report, held an “estimated… USD 31.23 billion” (approximately $46 billion AUD by today’s standards).

There are five playlists listeners can choose from, including

  • Crunchyroll Anime Essentials: which hosts the music soundtracking the newest anime season.
  • The OP White-Haired Sensei: a reference to characters whose stoic exteriors are at odds with their enigmatic interiors.
  • The Broody Black-Haired MC: described an ode to a character with a tragic history, whose “demeanor may intimate some, but deep down they just need a hug.”
  • The Bubbly Pink-Haired BFF: the playlist that evokes the friend whose bright personality stands alongside their underestimated strength.
  • The Journey Begins: the playlist that will situate the listener into the centre of their own story.

The playlists can be found through Spotify’s Anime Hub as a dedicated shelf. Crunchyroll’s podcast, Crunchyroll Presents: The Anime Effect, which the streamer’s website describes as a show that “explore[s] anime and how it shows up across your world” will also appear on the shelf.

Crunchyroll’s executive vice president of emerging business and general manager of Crunchyroll Games, Terry Li, says the merging of music and anime via the unexpected collaboration makes complete sense.

“Anime and Japanese music are a match made in pop culture heaven,” Li explained.

“Music is a vital part of the anime experience, and through our partnership with Spotify, we’re excited to amplify that connection and make fandom even more immersive for our fans.”

Spotify’s head of music in Japan, Kyota Onishi, added: “We are thrilled to partner with Crunchyroll to bring listeners a new curation of anime music to explore.”

“On Spotify, global streams of anime have surged over the past few years and we hope Anime Hub will become an indispensable part of Anime culture.”
