The first nationwide audience figures for Premier Gospel, Britain’s leading gospel radio station, reveal that 700,000 adults listen weekly – representing 1.3% of the population.

And the London-based station has also won ‘Radio Station of the Year’ for the second year running in the Global Touch Music Awards for 2015.

The new Audiomonitor audience figures come from the research company AudienceNet and reflect the results of an independent survey of 3,169 people [aged 15 and over] across the country. They are the first statistically representative measure of all UK audio across all formats, genres and devices – on air and on line.

Premier Gospel plays a wide variety of mainstream gospel music, including popular gospel choirs. It also features specialist shows of hip hop, house, African, reggae, jazz and Latin music.

And it was a public vote that secured the ‘Radio Station of the Year’ award for Premier Gospel.

“Gospel music offers a sense of community, hope and strength like no other genre,” says Muyiwa Olarewaju, Premier Gospel’s Station Director (pictured above).

“These fantastic figures reflect not only our audience listening on DAB radio in London but also on smartphones, tablets and through our website throughout the UK. It is a fitting way to mark our contribution to Black History month.”

“And we are particularly excited about the new award because it represents an accolade from the voting public. We are proud to have won against some strong international competition,” he says. “So thanks to everyone who voted for us.”

Recent research indicates that Premier Gospel’s breakfast show, presented by Yinka and Selene, and the drivetime show, hosted by Lady T, are particularly popular with listeners to the station.

In May this year, the station organised and presented Premier Gospel Week London, the only gospel music festival in the UK, where twelve acts performed across a variety of venues in the capital.

This summer saw Premier Gospel’s compilation album ‘This is Gospel’ – featuring both new and established UK gospel artists – reach the top 5 in the Christian Gospel charts.
