The company was formed through the merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc., completed on April 8, 2022.

The company's name is a combination from the Warner Bros. film studio and the Discovery Channel pay TV network which sees brands such as CNN, HBO, Discovery and Animal Planet under the same ownership.
