Rolling Back the Years - the Noughties
On Saturday we are giving ‘Irish Independent’ readers a special treat with the return of our stunning ‘Rolling Back The Years’ series of nostalgia supplements.
In 2011 we brought you the acclaimed 10-part collection which covered the period from 1950 to 1999.
Packed with great photographs from our unrivalled archives, the series explored different aspects of Irish life and culture.
We also took a stroll down memory lane in each decade with a reminder of the major news and sports stories of each five year period.
Full of great memories and nostalgia, the magazines also serve as a fantastic study aid, bringing our most recent history to life with top writers and our own reporters reflecting on events that they covered.
Now we are completing the collection with the Noughties and two brilliant 32-page supplements.
It was a decade of boom and bust, the euro, Roy Keane and Saipan, Bertie Ahern, the rise of the Spire in Dublin, the smoking ban in pubs and restaurants, a riot in O’Connell Street, the rise of reality TV shows and so much more.
In part one, we cover the years from 2000 to 2004.
The supplement deals with Ireland’s Celtic Tiger boom but other contributions include:
- Historian Diarmaid Ferriter puts the decade in context
- We recall the end of the Punt and introduction of the Euro
- A look back at Nelson Mandela’s trip to Ireland for the Special Olympics
- TV reporter Tommie Gorman writes about his 2002 TV interview with Roy Keane after the Ireland star was sent home
- Freeze Frame: The 00’s in pictures from the Irish Independent’s amazing archives
Part two, published on January 25, covers the years from 2005 to 2009. We look back at a turbulent political decade which saw the collapse of the Celtic Tiger and our rescue by the Troika. We also recall the day God Save the Queen rang around Croke Park and flick through the movies of the decade.
